Heuchera americana – American Alumroot Plug

Airy Cream Flowers & Year-Round Foliage | Shade Native for Woodland Gardens

Add lasting texture and quiet elegance to your shade garden with American Alumroot (Heuchera americana), a native woodland perennial grown as much for its stunning foliage as its flowers. Mounded rosettes of heart-shaped, lobed leaves emerge flushed with purple in spring, deepen to rich green in summer, and take on warm amber and red tones in fall — giving this plant genuine four-season appeal. In late spring, slender wiry stems rise well above the foliage, carrying delicate airy panicles of tiny greenish-cream bell-shaped flowers that bees can’t resist. This 2.25″ x 4″ planting plug will establish into a tidy, long-lived clump — perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, rock gardens, or as an understory ground cover.

At a Glance:

  • Bloom Time: May–July (flowering stems to 24 inches; foliage mound 12–15 inches)
  • Height at Maturity: 12–15 inches (foliage); up to 24 inches in bloom
  • Sunlight: Partial shade to full shade (tolerates more sun in cooler climates with consistent moisture)
  • Soil Moisture: Medium, well-drained; prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic soil
  • Pollinator Value: Attracts bees including the specialist plasterer bee Colletes aestivalis; juglone tolerant (safe to plant under black walnut)

Planting Notes:

  • Foliage is the star — highly variable leaf markings with silver veining, purple flushing, and marbled patterns
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or fall to maintain vigor
  • Remove spent flower stalks to keep plants tidy and encourage continued bloom
  • Drought tolerant once established, but foliage declines if soils dry out completely
  • Best planted in spring or fall; may take 1–2 seasons to reach full size from plug
  • Pair with wild ginger, foamflower, Pennsylvania sedge, wild geranium, or Christmas fern for a layered woodland planting

American Alumroot is the native alternative to the garden center coral bells hybrids — quieter in color, but richer ecologically and perfectly at home in a true woodland setting. Low-maintenance, deer resistant, and beautiful in every season, it earns its place at the front of any shaded border.

Native Plant Plugs – Affordable, Resilient, and Ready to Grow

Bring your landscape to life with native plants grown from seed in deep-rooted plugs. These young perennials may be small now, but they’re packed with potential—designed to establish quickly, support pollinators, and thrive in your local conditions.

Why Choose Plugs?

If you’re used to picking up gallon-size nursery pots, plugs may feel small—but here’s why they’re a smart investment:

  • Stronger roots, less stress: Our deep plugs grow roots down, not around, so they take off fast when planted.
  • Budget-friendly: Ideal for covering large areas or starting a garden on a budget.
  • Locally adapted: These native plants are grown from seed and hardened off outdoors, so they’re ready to handle your climate.

What to Expect

Patience pays off! These are first-year perennials, so most will focus on root growth in year one, with blooming and full performance by year two or three—depending on the species and growing conditions.

You may see a few flowers in the first season, but the real show starts next year. Think of this as an investment in a long-lasting, low-maintenance landscape.

Planting & Care

  • Prepare the soil: Remove weeds and loosen soil before planting.
  • Plant deep: Bury the full plug so the crown is level with the soil.
  • Water well: Keep moist for the first few weeks to help roots establish.
  • Mulch lightly: Great for moisture retention and weed suppression—just keep mulch off the stem.

Designed for Pollinators. Built to Last.

Whether you're starting a meadow, filling a border, or restoring habitat, native plugs are the best way to build beauty that supports bees, butterflies, and birds—from the ground up.
